The Issue of Fair Trade

I have customers ask me all the time, "Is your coffee Fair Trade?" Up until last year my response was that I am not a fan of the Fair Trade Certification process, however, all of our coffees are purchased from companies who are members of the International Coffee Agreement that supports fair wages and sustainability in farming practices. Last year though I caved - I added one coffee product that is certified Fair Trade Organic from Peru. The coffee was excellent and when that was exhausted I purchased a Fair Trade Organic from Mexico. It too is a great quality coffee.
Is it better than the Brazil Cerrado, the Costa Rican Tarrazu or the Cameroon Peaberry we also offer? Absolutely not. When you purchase a quality grade Arabica coffee the finished product is not good or bad - it is all good but in different ways. Some are fruitier, more chocolaty, nutty and so on but they are all sure to be an excellent cup of coffee. Personally, my favorite right now is the Cameroon Peaberry and it is not FTO.

Bourbon Street Vanilla Rooibos

     From the Cedarberg Region of South Africa, Bourbon Street Vanilla Rooibos has become one of the favorites at our Roastery. It is Choice Grade #1 and grown at altutudes of 2,000 feet above sea level. Rooibos means RED BUSH in Afrikaans and is a naturally decaffeinated drink.
     The vanilla flavoring gives the Rooibos a wonderful jazzy depth, fruity and sweet notes. The list of ingredients includes: Luxury rooibos, Calendula Petals, Almond slices, and natural flavors. A healthy source of Potassium and Magnesium.
   For hot tea use 1 teaspoon of Rooibos for each cup. Pour boiling water into the cup and let steep for 3 - 7 minutes. Add milk and sugar if preferred.
   For iced tea (to make 1 quart) place 6 teaspoons of Rooibos into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the Rooibos. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the Rooibos into the serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top off with cold water. Garnish and sweeten if desired.
   Try the Rooibos and post your comments.

Early Morning Cupping

Jeff and I had an early morning cupping today of the five roasts from yesterday. We have a new Honduras coffee that we will be adding to our Breakfast Blend.
